Show Me the Numbers

Using Research The topic of the the latest AVBRN doulas meeting was all about navigating current research and implementing it into a doula practice.  Since the majority of doulas and midwives are not PhD clinical researchers, the information is highly relevant but, honestly, it’s pretty boring.  Doulas and the families they serve are interested mainly on the plain language summaries and not so much with the pages upon pages of double-blind research tables. On the heels of that recent meeting of the minds, I came across this article by Plumbtree Baby discussing how care providers have been known to...

Monday Bitez in Lancaster!

I counted 18 food trucks in Sgt. Steve Owen (formerly Lancaster City) Park today! A DJ truck was playing music while Heather, Nick and I had dinner in the park on our blanket and cedar roll up table.  Heather had LA Street Mac & Cheese, I tried the Maine Lobster Tacos, and Nick had a Philly Cheese-steak. Next event is Monday, May 15 starting at 5 pm.  It may look bad, but parking was easy.  You just gotta cruise through the parking lot a couple times!   Source: Monday Bitez in...

DONA Represents Doulas at the Congressional Caucus on Maternity Care

The article below highlights why it’s important to find a CERTIFIED doula when you’re shopping for labor or postpartum support,.  DONA is the leading doula certification organization in the world because they’re proactive.  There’s a lot of certifying agencies out there, and each has it’s place, but if you’re looking for a leader in the industry in my opinion there’s none better. AVBRN highly values training and certification.  You’ll find support professionals who are certified with DONA, Lamaze, Informed Beginnings, Still Birth Day, Evidence Based Birth, and more.  AVBRN midwives, doulas, educators, counselors, and coaches are all trained and licensed professionals who are ready to help you achieve your birth goals. Recently, our board of directors kicked off our advocacy efforts by attending a meeting on Capitol Hill.  The invitation to attend and participate in the bipartisan Congressional Caucus Meeting on Maternity Care by staff of U.S. Representatives Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) and Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), aligned perfectly with our desire to increase advocacy and awareness around doula support. In addition to DONA International, there was a diverse coalition of maternal health representatives in attendance, including names such as American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology(ACOG), American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), March of Dimes, Lamaze International, Breastfeeding USAPreeclampsia Society, Centering Healthcare Institute, Childbirth Connections, National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM) and other maternal health specialists.
